Lip fillers in NYC are a popular cosmetic procedure performed to enhance the size and shape of the upper and lower lip. The goal of lip injections is to produce a beautiful, natural appearing improvement in your lip contour. As we age, we often lose soft tissue volume in our cheeks and lips. The volume of the lips may deflate over time due to atrophy of fat and muscle.
The cosmetic goals of our patients has been changing with emerging fashion trends and amongst different cultures. Fuller more plump lips are seen as a more youthful and sexually attractive trait. The corners of our mouth may turn down, the white border may fade and fine lines may radiate from the upper lip. Our lips may appear thinner, deflated, wrinkled, vertically longer or they may look like they are disappearing all together. The upper lip may develop vertical lines along the vermillion border that cannot be easily camouflaged with make-up. Smokers, people with gum recession, and women are particularly prone to developing these radiating vertical lip lines. The upper lip is usually the predominate focus of concern but the lower lip may also lose volume and sag.
Dr. Joel Kopelman has many easy and safe solutions to restore the contours, shape and volume of your lips. Lip fillers like Restylane or Juvederm Volbella are soft to the touch and can be injected comfortably using special topical anesthetic techniques. The volume in your lips will be enhanced without producing an exaggerated overdone appearance of your lips. Dr. Kopelman will take into account your unique contours and proportions in order to achieve better symmetry and facial balance.
Various temporary and permanent techniques can be used for lip augmentation. Dr. Kopelman believes that the safest method to enhance your lips is to use the hyaluronic acid (HA) filler Restylane because it is soft to the touch and the results can be seen immediately. Restylane is a hyaluronic acid gel that is a naturally occurring compound in the body that attracts water and holds up to 1,000 times it’s own weight. When Dr. Kopelman injects the lip filler the result is a plumper fuller lip that is balanced with other facial features and natural looking. If you are not pleased with your new lip contour or if you have had too much HA fillers injected elsewhere Dr. Kopelman has the ability to “melt away” the injection with an enzyme that will breakdown the hyaluronic acid gel.

Lip Filler Benefits
Lip Augmentation Techniques
Lips should be naturally balanced not exaggerated. Lip fillers done right by Dr. Kopelman will provide that perfect symmetry.
The lip filler procedure involves numbing the lips both topically and with regional nerve blocks. Dr. Kopelman will inject the filler with a blunt cannula along the vermillion “white” border starting at the corners of your lips and below the mucosa along the posterior dry- wet border. Posterior injections can produce a desirable mild pouting of the lip. In some patient’s filler may also be injected into flattened philtral ridges. Filler is never injected into the lip muscle because this may lead to lumpiness and faster resorption of the injectable material. In the great majority of patients lip filling is safe but complications may occur which includes lumpiness, granulomas, and the undesirable migration of the dermal fillers. Most people find the lip injections well tolerated, swelling is usually minimal after a lip augmentation and therefore you can resume your daily schedules immediately. Lip augmentation results are immediate gratification. You will see visible improvement immediately. However, it is important to understand that you might have swelling from the injection which is expected and it will take approximately 48 hours before the inflammation subsides.
Frequently asked questions
about Lip Fillers
Lip fillers augment the lips through a non-surgical, non-permanent cosmetic approach to contour and enhance the size and shape of your lips using specific hyaluronic gel fillers.
Dr. Kopelman believes that as some people age, gum and tooth recession occurs, which shifts the structural support for the lips in a posterior direction causing the lips to “disappear”. Women, in particular, are disturbed by the loss of volume in their lips and their inability to apply lipstick without the lipstick “bleeding” into the radiating vertical lines. These patients are gratified when they have the volume in their lips restored
Yes, in order to minimize bruising and additional swelling Dr. Kopelman advises his patients to stop any of the following drugs or homeopathic medicines such as fish oil, vitamin E, aspirin, Motrin, Advil, ibuprofen, and many other blood thinners two weeks prior to their lip filler treatment. In addition if you have a history of cold sores Dr.Kopelman will prescribe medication in advance to lower the risk of a recurrence. Most people can be treated at the time of their initial consultation.
Dr. Kopelman only uses only F.D.A. approved lip fillers that are made of hyaluronic acid gels. The risks of lip injections are rare. Infection and allergic reactions are extremely rare. Dr. Kopelman is an experienced expert injector who can minimize the risks associated with lip augmentation by following strict sterile protocols but he cannot eliminate all the rare side effects. If you have active cold sores then you should postpone having lip injections. If you are prone to cold sores you should take Valtrex twice a day one day prior to lip injections and five days after the injections to prevent an outbreak of a cold sore. Depending upon your aesthetic goals, Dr. Kopelman will select the ideal filler such as Restylane Silk, Belotero Balance, or Juvederm Volbella, to volumize and fill in lines around your lips.
The duration of the lip fillers can vary between patients. Some patients absorb the lip filler faster than others. However, most people find that lip fillers made of hyaluronic acid gel can last approximately 6 months. Re-treatment approximately twice a year is recommended to maintain the aesthetic improvement.
No, Dr. Kopelman does not want you to massage your lips or apply ice. These maneuvers can actually cause more swelling.
The majority of patients who have lip augmentation are ecstatic about their appearance but rarely a patient wants to reverse their lip enhancement. Reversing the volume enhancement or an undesirable lump is easily performed with an injection of hyaluronidase, an enzyme that immediately and specifically breaks down the hyaluronic acid gels.
