The new skin that is generated will have improved texture and appear smoother, less blemished, and rejuvenated.
The Fraxel laser is a fractionated laser device that splits the laser light beam into multiple microscopic beams. Fractionated lasers are very useful devices because they vaporize columns of skin called microscopic treatment zones leaving behind adjacent untreated microscopic columns of skin. These untreated areas act as a reservoir of cells that speed up the regeneration of adjacent columns of skin that have been removed with the laser. The Fraxel laser’s energy penetrates into the dermis and stimulates fibroblasts to produce a layer of new collagen which thickens the skin. Unlike other skin resurfacing lasers, Fraxel lasers are safe and effective for rejuvenating skin on and off the face. Therefore, wrinkles and sun damage of the neck and chest can be greatly improved as well as stretch marks on the abdomen that typically occur following pregnancy or after a rapid gain in body weight.
Additionally hyperpigmentation and acne scars can also be addressed with laser resurfacing. Dr. Kopelman utilizes Fraxel lasers for superficial wrinkles while using an erbium/YAG laser for deeper wrinkles. Skin resurfacing is also commonly combined with eyelid surgery to address loss of elasticity of eyelid skin and to improve the quality of the skin during facelift surgery.
There are two different types of lasers that are available to address skin rejuvenation:
1. Non-Ablative Lasers send light pulses into the dermis while leaving the epidermis (outer layer of the skin) untouched. Fraxel is a non-ablative laser that allows you to improve surface skin irregularities and dyspigmentation with minimal downtime.
2. Ablative Lasers use very high heat to destroy the entire epidermis layer (outer layer of the skin) and portions of the dermis. Still very effective lasers but require a healing period of two to four weeks. Ablative lasers include carbon dioxide pulsed laser as well as a YAG erbium laser.
“I decided to have Fraxel laser resurfacing with Dr. Kopelman. He is a very kind and compassionate doctor who spends a great deal of time with his patients. My skin looks fabulous and I am extremely pleased with my results. My husband was so impressed with the results that he also had Fraxel and fillers done. I was so pleased with my youthful skin I decided to have a second Fraxel treatment. Dr. Kopelman and his warm inviting staff are in a league of their own.”
Rejuvenate your skin with a short recovery with a Fraxel laser treatment.
As you prepare for your Fraxel Dual treatment, Dr. Kopelman will apply a numbing cream to ensure that you have a comfortable procedure. The Fraxel procedure will take about 20 to 30 minutes as Dr. Kopelman passes the laser over the area on the body being treated.
After your Fraxel laser treatment, you should expect to experience mild swelling, possible peeling and redness in the area treated for a couple of days. Within a week the sunburn appearance will subside as new skin cells appear providing you with a rejuvenated appearance. Dr. Kopelman will recommended that during the days of your recovery that you stay out of the sun, and when you resume your normal activities he will likely recommend that you apply SPF sunscreen and moisturizer daily.
After a series of treatments wrinkles, fine lines and sun damage will diminish. The silvery sheen of mature stretch marks will improve and the skin tone will appear more like normal skin. When Fraxel laser skin therapy is used in combination with IPL (intense pulsed light) treatments, the red discoloration of new stretch marks can also be diminished. In order to obtain the best results, usually a series of Fraxel laser and IPL treatments are necessary. The exact number of treatments will be determined based on your response to the procedure. Some patients will get excellent improvement in as little as two treatments but others may require additional sessions depending upon their reaction. The reduced downtime following a Fraxel laser treatment is a big advantage compared to ablative lasers.
Fraxel laser treatments are ideal for targeting fine lines and wrinkles, such as crow’s feet and brow lines. Fraxel targets: acne scars, pigmentation, sun damage, and pores.
